Team total goals: over/under on the home or away team

Team total goals is an over/under bet on the goals of one team only, the home side or the away side. We explain how half, whole and quarter lines settle, what £100 on over 1.25 home goals at 1.90 pays (−£50 with one goal, +£90 with two or more) and which combinations with team totals the calculators handle.

Key takeaways

  • On a whole line the stake is refunded when the team scores exactly that many goals, and a quarter line splits the stake in half across the two neighbouring lines.
  • With £100 on over 1.25 home goals at 1.90, one home goal means −£50, and two or more mean +£90.
  • At one home goal the quarter line loses £50, between the 1.5 line's −£100 and the 1.0 line's full refund, which is why its odds usually sit between theirs.
  • An own goal counts for the team it is credited to, and at a neutral venue the home team is the one listed first.

What is a team total?

A team total is a bet on whether the chosen team scores more (Over) or fewer (Under) goals than the line given. The opponent's goals do not matter. Bookmakers usually list the market as home team goals, away team goals, "team goals" or "team total over/under".

Examples:

  • Over 1.5 (home): the home team scores at least 2 goals,
  • Under 0.5 (away): the away team does not score,
  • Over 1.25 (home): a quarter line, half the stake on 1.0 and half on 1.5.

The lines work the same way as in the ordinary over/under market on match goals. What counts is the score after regular time, and an own goal is credited to the team that benefits from it.

How team totals settle

Half lines (0.5, 1.5, 2.5…)

There are no refunds. An example for the home team's 1.5 line:

Home goalsOver 1.5 (home)Under 1.5 (home)
0 (e.g. 0-2)LossWin
1 (e.g. 1-1)LossWin
2 (e.g. 2-0)WinLoss
3 or moreWinLoss

Whole lines (1.0, 2.0…)

When the team scores exactly as many goals as the line, the stake is refunded. Over 1.0 (home) returns the stake if the home team scores once, wins with two goals and loses with none.

Quarter lines (0.75, 1.25, 1.75…)

A quarter line is two bets of half the stake each on the neighbouring lines:

Home goalsOver 1.25 (home)Over 1.75 (home)
0LossLoss
1Half loss (half on 1.0 refunded, half on 1.5 lost)Loss
2WinHalf win (half on 1.5 wins, half on 2.0 refunded)
3 or moreWinWin

The way the stake is split is identical to the Asian handicap.

A worked example: £100 on over 1.25

You put £100 on Over 1.25 (home) at 1.90. That is £50 on each half.

Home goalsSettlementPayoutProfit or loss
0Loss£0−£100
1Half loss£50 (half refunded)−£50
2 or moreWin100 × 1.90 = £190+£90

On a plain 1.5 line the same odds would give −£100 with one home goal, and on the 1.0 line a full refund of £100. The quarter line is a compromise between those two lines, which is why its odds usually sit between theirs.

Team totals and other markets

  • Match goals. Match goals are the sum of both teams' goals, so Over 2.5 can land even with Under 0.5 (away), e.g. at 3-0.
  • Both teams to score. BTTS yes is Over 0.5 (home) and Over 0.5 (away) at the same time. More in both teams to score.
  • 1X2 and double chance. Every home win means the home side scored at least once, so Over 0.5 (home) covers all home wins, plus score draws and defeats with a consolation goal. More on the basic markets in 1X2 betting and double chance.
  • Correct score. Under 0.5 (away) is the sum of all correct scores with nil for the away team: 0-0, 1-0, 2-0 and so on.

Team totals in the surebet calculator

In the surebet calculator you will find team totals in two groups, "Home team goals" and "Away team goals", with lines from 0.25 to 6, quarter lines included. A bet shows as e.g. Over 1.5 (home) or Under 0.75 (away).

Typical two-bet combinations:

  • a mirror pair, e.g. Over 1.5 (home) + Under 1.5 (home) at two bookmakers,
  • X2 + Over 0.5 (home): a draw and an away win land on X2, and every home win means a home goal,
  • 1X + Over 0.5 (away): the mirror combination,
  • Over 0.5 (home) + BTTS no: if the home side does not score, BTTS no lands,
  • a positive Asian handicap on one team with Over on the other team's goals, e.g. AH 1 (+1.5) + Over 1.5 (away).

With whole and quarter lines, refunds and half results appear in the settlement scenarios table. A refund returns the stake in full, and the calculator counts it in every row of the table.

Team totals in the dutching calculator

In the dutching calculator you pick home and away team goals from the list of bets, just as in the surebet calculator. You can, for example, combine Under 1.5 (home) with several correct scores in which the home team scores twice. The "Settlement by score" table shows which scores land one bet, which land several and which land none. How the calculator splits one stake over several selections is explained in what dutching is.

What to watch out for

  • Which team. Check whether the line is for the home or the away team: on a bet slip the difference is sometimes a single word.
  • Neutral venues. The "home" team is the one listed first, wherever the match is played.
  • Quarters are not halves. Over 1.25 and Over 1.5 settle differently when the team scores once.
  • Bet responsibly. A one-team market is no "safer" than any other, and scoring stats from a few matches say little about a single game.

In other sports

The same bet in other sports is team points in basketball, team goals in ice hockey and a player's games in tennis, covered in tennis total games and game handicap. The line rules are the same as here; the only difference is whether overtime counts.

FAQ

What is a team total bet?

A team total is an over/under bet on the number of goals of one team, home or away. The opponent's goals have no effect on how it settles.

How does over 1.25 home goals settle?

Half the stake goes on Over 1.0 and half on Over 1.5. If the home team scores once, one half is refunded and the other loses; with two goals or more the bet wins in full.

Do own goals count towards a team's goals?

Yes, an own goal is credited to the team that benefits from it. If an away defender puts the ball into his own net, it is a home goal.

What is the difference between team goals and match goals?

Match goals are the sum of both teams' goals, while a team total counts the goals of one of them only. A 3-0 result lands Over 2.5 match goals and Under 0.5 (away) at the same time.

Can you build a surebet on team totals?

Yes, e.g. with a pair of Over and Under on the same line at two bookmakers, or with X2 + Over 0.5 (home). The margin in each bookmaker's prices keeps most such pairs from paying, so these chances are rare: always check them in the surebet calculator. How surebets work is explained in what is arbitrage betting.
