Matches from 13 October 2025 to 13 October 2026 (12,956). Chances computed before each match, with parameters fitted on older matches only.
  • The ranking favourite won 49.0% of matches.
  • Log-loss 1.024 vs 1.072 from outcome frequencies alone (lower is better).
  • A dot on the diagonal means good calibration: outcomes given 30% happened 30% of the time.

How the ranking works

  • Elo points move from the loser to the winner. The less expected the result, the bigger the change, and a favourite's draw costs points too.
  • We use the 90-minute result and the goal difference with a diminishing effect: 3-0 earns more than 1-0, but not three times as much.
  • Home advantage is tracked separately for every league and updated after each match.
  • Continental cup matches (Champions League, Europa League, Conference League, Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana, Club World Cup, AFC Champions League) move the club and its whole league. That is how the ranking learns which league is stronger.
  • Promoted and relegated clubs carry their Elo into the new league. A newcomer from outside our data starts at the level of the clubs that left the league.
  • The parameters were tuned so the ranking predicts the next results as well as possible, on more than 300,000 matches played since 1992.
